ok I don’t know if the same science applies to deodorants that don’t contain aluminium (I use standard anti-perspirant roll-ons usually) but they could be worth a try: 1) fellow evening shower-er and I put it on before bed because apparently that’s when your skin is most receptive to whatever’s working, plus it tends to work through the 24 hours anyway, 2) switching brands regularly in general is good because your skin “gets used” to the active ingredients after time, so it keeps your pit bacteria on their toes.

Point 2) I’m less sold on but my drive for novelty means I do it anyway and it works 4 me!

I did not know about switching brands because the body adapts!! There is a store in Cambridge MA called Cambridge Naturals that has a huge selection of natural deodorants, and I think seeing them all together made me long for novelty/the buzz of trying a new scent or product. I also think that spray deodorants are less effective than sticks, because the spray doesn't touch all the skin?

I feel that but then also when I’m dragging a stick across my hairy pits it feels like some of the skin’s not getting touched. Creams I guess would be the best texture to really rub it into any pit but the only one I’ve tried left a waxy residue on all my clothes that could only come out on a really hot wash :/

Welcome back!!!!

We just got this deodorant at Berkeley Bowl while visiting CA (omg have you been to this grocery store) and it feels like the only deodorant that’s ever worked on me??? I’m a night showerer as well and put it on after shower and it works all day next day. https://www.pure-earth.com/deodorant.htm We got the spray kind. It’s super cheap.

My gf recently learned the phrase “industry plant” and declares that Nicholas Galitzine is one, but time.

I have seen Thai stick for sale!! A classic (you know it's a good product when the website is from 1995) but I've never tried. I've only been to the California Bay Area once (in Wisconsin, people say Bay Area to mean Green Bay and surrounding towns lol). If I went back, I would visit so many natural food-type stores.

Maddy, I would pay extra to read a series on your travels thru the Bay Area health food store circuit. Just sayin!!

that cool kid is right, to the extent that the total mass of all bacteria is something like 1000x more than the total mass of all humans!

This is a science fact I will never forgot.

maddy court i'm going to be totally honest your deodorant situation does not sound very functional. i've been using my girlfriend's Lume deodorant (the one that is all over the stores and commericals) and it's been great! i'm excited to try some of the recs in the comments, thank you for getting this vital conversation started

The deodorant conversation in these comments has been so helpful! Thank you one and all! 💞

My hot take for deodorant is that one should just wear a proper antiperspirant to prevent the odor! As someone with hyperhydrosis, my clinical strength antiperspirant will be pulled from my sweaty, dead hands. I realize this is not a popular opinion, however, so I shall remain over here, in the corner.

HIGHLY interested in the rural Vermonter drama, but I understand if it's not worth writing about.

Looking forward to your writing this month! Happy Pride!

This specific drama is actually really depressing, but something funny that happened is a construction crane tipped over on the highway and nobody knows how to get it up again. I drive past it a few times a week.

Ooh, that sucks. I like how the company wasn't available to make a statement. I, too, would become unavailable if one of my cranes tipped over into multiple lanes of traffic and caused a massive scene and potentially costly accident. Do you think they're too afraid to bring the extra cranes to the scene to flip this one over because those might tip, too? Or, perhaps no one will loan them cranes to do it because they've done something so embarrassing with theirs. At least you get something to look at a few times per week!

well-timed deodorant recs, thank you Maddy!(And Liz!) I’ve been using Schmidt’s for the past few years, and all of a sudden it’s not working anymore and I stink all the time (??). I also appreciate and relate to your protocol re: using “good deodorant” vs. using up deodorant that doesn’t work but I don’t want to throw away.

Expand full comment

I just learned from another comment that your body can adjust to deodorants, so you have to switch it up every once in a while!! I think we deserve to throw away the bad deodorant but at least for me, it's more emotional than logical.

Lol same here— it’s more emotional than logical 😆 scarcity complex!

strong opinions on this one - fat and the moon’s sensitive pit cream is the only natural deodorant that has not mysteriously stopped working for me at a totally arbitrary point (now after 3y!) and it does last foreverr especially in the larger sizes. i also have a furtively tender relationship to poetic pits underarm charm bc the palo santo version smells so good that multiple strangers have stopped me in public to get the name of my scent, but it doesn’t last more than like 2 weeks which is insane for the price so it has become my ~room~service~cookies~

scandal and intrigue in rural VT also brought me back on Facebook but in the end it was too cursed, I recommend attending town selectboard meetings and (carefully) gossiping with old people instead

I recently heard about a friend of a friend whose job is monitoring Front Porch Forum (every post is read and approved by a human, apparently), and I feel like the rural VT drama they have access to is unparalleled.

I use Fat and the Moon natural deodorant and really like it! Comes in a small glass jar - no plastic :) let me know if you ever visit the Bay Area (Oakland!)
