We are ladyparts on peacock is the absolute purest fun but not stupid show. Peacock is desperate to get viewers so they often have a $20 for a whole year subscription. I also love the Amazon league of their own reboot for some escapism 🩷
Currently sick and struggling with my usual faves so this is perfect timing! Now to see which of these are available in Canada…
Other recs (though lacking much queerness): Ted Lasso got my household through our first bout of COVID. Abbott Elementary is bitesized and fun. And Alone is a great rec (some seasons to try: season 11! Frozen! The sweet sweet innocence of season 1 and the twist of partners in season 4!)
miss fisher’s murder mysteries is my favorite mystery show for old people but it’s really good! set in 1920s australia and follows a flapper-esque independent woman who’s nosy and carries a gun. there is also a butch lesbian doctor who appears every so often.
frankie drake mysteries is very similar but canadian. also not as good as miss fisher but still enjoyable, easy watching.
I would like to add that Aphrodyky was a real lesbian club night, it was definitely on in the years 2017 - 2019 while I lived in London. Played only female vocalists, (lots of Beyoncé) and the club would be full by 10pm as lots of couples went out for their bi-monthly dance. As a techno lesbian who normally went out around midnight like a normal club rat, I spent many nights in the queue, being told “we’re at capacity, it’s one in one out”. And this was me trying to be early, and arriving at 11! Sighs.
i can't believe i haven't watched the bisexual. i am sold!!
i propose that both of these people should consider delving into the real l word (not the l word, but the reality tv spin-off of the l word)! there are 3 seasons. it follows the lives of the most disfunction floppy beanie 2010 LA dykes you can possibly imagine. it is not soothing nor wholesome, but it is absolutely bonkers in a way that will transport you. i think it's maybe on paramount plus? but you can also find it on some ill*gal streamers. TW: white dreads.
Oh I LOVE the Real L Word, so interesting that it's available to stream with Gen Q has been wiped off the internet. We should do a Real L Word panel with Clover!!
I would also add Love on the Spectrum to the list of shows. Season 2 features a lesbian :) but in general I found all episodes to be endearing and wholesome.
Earlier this week I was trying to remember the name of Dyke Central - I can’t believe you just featured it. THANK YOU for saving me from googling “dyke show 2010s” “indie dyke short series” etc etc
We must be on the same wavelength because I randomly just remembered Dyke Central! There were SO MANY web series and shorts from that era--some truly unwatchable, but all important. I hope there's an effort to archive them.
Very much feel you on the wholesomeness of Japanese dating shows - there’s one called Love Village, where “older” contestants (some are in their mid 30s) try to find a partner. They have to fix up an old house together and are on a really tight food budget. The contestants feel so much more real and vulnerable and it’s a similar commentary style. Kind of funny and wholesome. I watched it with my mom and she loves it.
my digestible but not stupid, mostly queer or queer adjacent, mostly wholesome shows would include sort of (max/hbo), somebody somewhere (max/hbo), insecure (max/hbo/netflix?) shrill (hulu) schitts creek (hulu) and sex education (netflix)
"digestible but not stupid TV" is the holy grail and what I am always in search of but rarely successful in finding. Agree with all the above! I also really enjoy Please Like Me and What We Do In The Shadows. Bookmarking this so come back to when I'm considering rewatching Friends for the thousandth time (yuck)

The Bisexual also gets nightlife points for properly assessing the Dalston Superstore vibe of that era

Thank you for introducing me to the term “scuttlebutt”
